Disability Insurance
Disabilities are physical or mental impairments that effect day to day activities and can last a lifetime. Many disabilities can also be present at birth. These impairments can range from physical, sensory, motor or mental impairments.
Disabilities make it hard for people to continue working, get a job suitable for them and be mobile. They effect whole families and can make it hard for families to make ends meet. That is why it is important for people with certain conditions to get disability insurance. Disability insurance will help replace missing income if you become disabled and cannot perform your work any longer.
People with type 1 diabetes and other chronic diseases should look into disability insurance in case they think that they may not be able to work in the future.
Many people are familiar with short-term disability insurance. Sometimes referred to as sick leave, short term disability insurance policies supplement your income if you are unable to work due to an illness, injury or pregnancy. Many employers provide coverage for sick leave which will last from a few days up to a year, depending on how long you have worked for the company.
Long-term disability insurance will usually last for a certain number of years or until retirement. People can get separate long-term disability plans in addition to employee plans but need to be careful when getting them. Some of the cheaper long-term policies will not pay off in the end and will only cover certain disabilities and may not be worth the money.
No disability insurance — whether it be employee plans or separate disability insurance plans — will cover 100% of your missing income but will help you during times of need.
